What is Math Rock anyway? For someone like me who was never any good at math but loves music the term comes as a bit of a surprise. But yes, music has a lot to do with math, whether you like it or not. Math Rock is a style that is characterized by its break offs and resumptions and its altogether atypical rhythmic structures. Maybe my math teacher could have impressed me with playing some math rock tunes back in the day? Who knows…
Anyway, Pharaohs are best described as a math rock band, although on their website they refer to themselves als Math Pop Rock (to confuse you with more genres). If you like Foals or Bloc Party, this will be your thing.
In 2009 the band released a 7 track EP which included the single “Squashed against my Wall” which has been critically acclaimed by the UK press (and by me for that matter).
Subsequently the band have toured with bands such as Young Guns or The Subways. At the moment they are working on a full length and they tour Germany and France. Their latest single “Photosynthesis” is available for free download on their website.
The band will be playing two shows in Berlin. I’d recommend going to both!
